Ahmedabad, May 20, 2024: The Venus Institute of Physiotherapy, affiliated with Swarrnim Startup and Innovation University, recently spearheaded a groundbreaking study addressing the pressing issue of chronic neck pain among cab drivers in Gujarat. Conducted during the academic year 2023-24, this research highlights a critical but often overlooked occupational health concern.
Bachelor of Physiotherapy student at Venus Institute of Physiotherapy, Khushboo Rana, under the guidance of Dr Jaynesh Vandra and Dr Arvind Chauhan, led the pivotal study. The research surveyed 300 drivers across various locations in Gujarat, revealing alarming statistics: 66% of the drivers reported experiencing significant neck pain, as measured by the Neck Disability Index (NDI). This index, comprising 10 sections, provided a comprehensive assessment of the drivers’ neck pain and its impact on their daily activities and quality of life.
The study underlines the urgent need for interventions and ergonomic enhancements to alleviate the burden of chronic neck pain among drivers. To improve their well-being and safety, the research suggests several practical measures such as adjusting car seats, using proper head rests, taking regular breaks, performing neck exercises, and adjusting mirror placement, among others.
