Ahmedabad, September 17, 2024: In line with the ongoing Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban and the Swachhta Hi Seva Abhiyan, launched a campaign to raise awareness about waste segregation and eliminate the use of single use-plastic. The campaign began with street play performances organised by the department in five different areas of Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Organised by the Urban Development and Urban Housing Development Department of the state government, the initiative was held saw street play performances held across several locations such as Khanwadi in Ramol, New Maninagar – Srinand City, Oxygen Park, Jashodanagar Bus Stand, and Bombay Conductor Road, among others.
The idea behind this initiative was to cultivate the habit of segregating wet and dry waste, among fellow residents and also encourage them to eliminate the use of single-use plastic completely.
Through powerful street play performances, the harmful impact of single-use plastics on the environment was showcased lucidly. The performances left a lasting impression on the audience and made people aware about how such plastics lead to environmental degradation and endanger ecosystems.
The street play performances were well-received by local communities in Ramol Ward, with a turnout of about 200-250 people for each performance. A total of five such street play performances were showcased across the ward, to ensure the message reaches the audience.
The initiative was aligned with the government of Gujarat’s commitment to ban single-use plastics and aimed at inspiring collective action towards ‘Nirmal Gujarat 2.0’ – the vision for a cleaner and greener Gujarat.
As part of the larger campaign for Ahmedabad, some 200 shows are scheduled to be performed across 48 wards that fall under the ambit of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Additionally, some 125 shows will take place across 25 Nagar Palikas within the Ahmedabad Zone.
The Urban Development and Urban Housing Development Department of the Government of Gujarat urges all citizens to participate in this movement and do their bit to realise the vision of a clean, plastic-free Gujarat.
