Today Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi announced that from now onwards Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award will be renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Kehl Ratna Award, subsequently after Indian women hockey team lost narrowly in its Olympic bronze medal match. A day before, the men’s hockey team won an Olympic bronze.
PM Modi said he had been getting a lot of requests to change the name of the award.
“I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views.
“Respecting their sentiments, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award!” declared PM through his official tweeter handle.
