PIL in Gujarat High Court on irregularities in voters list

Today in Ahmedabad, at Gujarat High Court a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed requesting a judicial inquiry against the state election commission (SEC) and re-polling for those whose names were found deleted from the voters’ lists during first phase of election on November 22 for 6 municipal corporations of the state. Hearing on PIL is likely by tomorrow. PIL is filed by an advocate cum activist K R Koshti.  On petition by Koshti earlier HC ordered the SEC to modify its notification for the local polls to include the NOTA option for voters. In today’s PIL he  had pointed out that thousands of names in the voters’ list were found to have been stamped as ‘deleted’ on the polling day in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar cities.

He alleged that the SEC and the district collectors cum returning officers of the 6 municipal corporations, did not follow the prescribed rules and procedures for deleting the names of voters who possessed legitimate identity cards and went to respective booth to cast their votes. He also requested the court to set up a judicial inquiry against the SEC in the matter ordering for fresh polls for those whose names were deleted from the voters’ register as an interim relief measure.
