Ahmedabad, December 2, 2020: City-based town planner and leading developer Mr NK Patel has taken over as the national president of Institute of Town Planners India (ITPI), a premier national body of town planners.
Patel is the first person from Gujarat in 48 years to be elected as office bearer of the institute. Mr HK Mewada, who designed the city of Gandhinagar, was the last Gujarat-based town planner elected office bearer of the institute way back in 1972.
Mr. NK Patel is a gold medallist post-graduate in Urban Planning from CEPT. He served in the state’s town planning department, and also worked as town planner in AUDA for nearly 17 years. Currently, he is serving as chairman of The National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), Gujarat. He is also a former president of Gujarat Institute of Civil Engineers and Architects (GICEA) and past chairman of ITPI’s Gujarat chapter.
“Town planning and urban planning are critical for planned development. The role of town planners is ever-evolving and has broadened from focus just on land use to land use, transport, economy and environment. It is a matter of pride for me to take over as national president of ITPI. We at ITPI will put in our best efforts to usher in structural transformation in these fields,” Mr. NK Patel said.
“As India becomes increasingly urbanised, dedicated efforts are required to ensure urban infrastructure keeps pace with it. Slum-free cities, affordable housing, better transport facilities, and water and waste management, should be areas of central focus. During my tenure, I would work to focus on bringing these into our planning frameworks, academics and practice,” he said further.
“For the best outcome, urban planning needs to be integrated with and complement the Atmanirbhar Bharat, Swachch Bharat, Smart Cities, Amrut and other relevant national and state programmes” He added.
ITPI works to promote dynamic, inclusive and integrated Town and Country planning practice, education, research and institutional mechanism for vibrant, sustainable and resilient spatio-economic development of towns, cities and regions. ITPI has its role carved to promote planned, economic, scientific and artistic development of towns, cities and rural areas, and to foster the teaching of subjects related to town and country planning among others.
Institute of Town Planners India (ITPI) was established in New Delhi in 1941. The School of Planning and Architecture, under ITPI, offers Bachelor’s, Master’s as well as Doctoral programmes in various domains. ITPI exclusively provides training at various levels, in different aspects of human habitat and environment. The school also offers planning, architecture and design courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

He has been appointed a top position of leading entity as President of ITPI Institute of Town Planners of India. He has also worked for 17 years as Town Planner in AUDA Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority.
