Vinay Sharma, 1 of the 6 convicts of much condemned 2012 Delhi gang rape case, allegedly attempted suicide at Tihar Jail late on Wednesday night. As per police, Sharma appears to have consumed some pills before trying to hang himself with a towel. However, an inmate woke up and brought him down and alerted the jail management. He was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital around midnight. He is under observation and police said he is likely to survive. A West Delhi district police team and the Tihar Jail authorities are simultaneously probing the circumstances of the suicide attempt.
In March 2013, Ram Singh, one more accused in the Nirbhaya gang rape case, committed suicide by hanging in his cell in Tihar. While some suspected it to be a case of murder, however subsequent probe confirmed that it was a suicide. Sharma and the 5 others have been awarded death sentence.
