Maneka Gandhi,Minister for Women and Child Development stronlgy favoured treating juveniles accused of heinous crimes like rape on par with adult offenders and no sympathy should be shown towards them.
Speaking to media, Maneka said as police, half sexual crimes were committed by “16-year-olds who know that as per Juvenile Justice Act, they can take advantage of it, unless we bring tham into purview of law thay not be scared and induldge into premeditated murder and rape”.
Former WCD Minister Krishna Tirath during UPA rule had proposed that juveniles above 16 years for heinous crimes be treated equally like adult offenders.
However, some NGOs and National Commission of Protection of Child Rights which stated that such proposal was against child rights.
