Kumar Mangalam Birla (49), chairman of the $41 billion multinational Aditya Birla Group, has become the new chairman of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A).
The Union HRD ministry has made an official announcement about Birla’s appointment. The procedure to select the new chairman had begun in September. The ministry had selected Birla’s name and had sought his consent earlier.
The first list of the IIM-A’s search committee was rejected in May by the ministry then headed by Smriti Irani. The new search panel of IIM-A chaired by Ahmedabad-based pharma tycoon Pankaj Patel dropped one name from the previous list. The new list contained the names of Infosys chairman R Seshasayee; HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh; and Birla. The ministry approved Birla’s name for IIM-A chairman’s post last week, announcement for which was made today.
