The Congress today faced a temporary hitch following Income Tax department froze its main bank accounts, including those of the Youth Congress. However, the party quickly challenged the move, and the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal granted relief by de-freezing the accounts until a final hearing made by next week. The Congress party issued a clarification stating that the party is mandated to ensure that a sum of ₹ 115 crores has to be maintained in their bank accounts. The amount has to remain untouched in compliance with the directive from the tax authorities, implying a freeze on these funds.
As a direct repercussion to this move by Income Tax authorities Gujarat Congress leaders including Gujarat State Congress President, Rajya Sabha Member Shaktisinh Gohih, Ahmedabad City Congress President Himmatsinh, Vidhan Sabha Congress Vice-President Shaish Parmar, MLA Imran Khedawa, Congress Working President Indravijaysinh Gohil, Ahmedabad city Sangthan Prabharishri Bimal Shah along with partymen were detained by Police.
Gujarat Congress leaders were protested in front of statue of Mahatma Gandhiji at Income Tax Circle on Ashram Road in Ahmedabad city.
