Valves engineered from animal tissue using the man made technique are called melody valves. This is the first case of Gujarat where a melody valve is placed in pulmonary position with trans-catheter technique.
Ahmedabad, 30th January-2023: Dr. Vishal Changela, Dr. Atul Maslekar, Dr. Hetal Shah, Dr. Manik Chopra, Dr. Vyom Mori, Dr. Sumit Dhir and the entire Cath Lab team at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Ahmedabad performed India’s first surgery to place a melody valve in native RVOT in the heart of a 44-year-old patient, which is a matter of pride for Ahmedabad.

Giving information about this unique case, consultant cardiology Dr. Vishal Changela (chief doctor of the team) said that “Alpeshbhai Patel, a 44-year-old man, had tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) when he was 8 years old. In which there is a hole in the heart. (VST) and one of the valves of the heart (pulmonary valve) was not functioning at all. At the age of eight, he underwent open heart surgery in Mumbai in which TOF repair also known as intracardiac repair, in which the hole in the heart The VSD was closed and the valve that was bad was removed and after the operation he started leading a normal life. After many years at 44 years of age he developed symptoms of heart disease like fatigue, shortness of breath as per the advice of the doctors, he underwent a heart checkup which revealed that two valves of the heart were leaking, one valve which was removed in the original surgery had a lot of leakage due to which the heart was dilated and also the left side of the lung was very tight.”

At Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Ahmedabad, a stent was placed in the left lung before opening it and then a new valve was inserted through a telescope. That is, inside the cath lab, a small vein is punctured in the side of the leg and all the instruments are taken into the heart, similar to the technique with angiography angioplasty, and a stent is placed and then a new valve is placed. A melody valve was fitted which was 22 mm in size. The surgery was very successful and the patient was discharged within a day and a half of the surgery.

This type of valve is implanted with this technique which is called trans-catheter pulmonary valve implantation which was not a valve, the name of the valve was pulmonary valve where Melody pulmonary valve was placed which is engineered on animal tissue with manmade technique. The valve is called a melody valve. This is the first case of Gujarat where the melody valve is placed in a pulmonary position with trans-catheter technique. Melody Pulmonary Valve is usually implanted in the heart with an artificial material, but this is the first case in India where the Melody Valve is implanted directly into the patient’s heart in the native RVOT. Dr. Vishal Changela (Chief Doctor of the team) said.”

Mr. Hemant Bhatnagar, Facility Director, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Ahmedabad said, “It is a matter of great pride for us that India’s first surgery to place the melody valve in native RVOT was performed here, for which I congratulate the entire catlab team and Dr. Vishal Changela.”
