Congress MLA Gyasuddin Shaikh has written a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, questioning the party’s policies about Muslims and praised the work of Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel giving birth to controversy. “Congress is a secular party and Muslims have been loyal to it for decades. But they have been under-recognised in the party recently. Only 1 Muslim is in the newly elected 25 Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) delegates.Going by population in the state, at least 3 members should have been from this community,” said a source, citing the letter’s content. Letter also discussed the issue of co-ordination committee. “Recently the committee was formed for 8 municipalities: Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Junagadh. But there was no Muslim acndidate in the committee. This despite the fact that the population of Muslims in these cities is about 20 %. Even in nagarpalikas, Muslims are under-represented,” said the source.
