Yesterday, Additional sessions judge S J Raje granted anticipatory bail to Samat Bhatu, a close relative of Prof Sarman Jhala of Gujarat University, in the case filed against professor by Jhala’s female colleagues was booked for writing obscene letters to them. Jhala is in Police custody and his wife, Bhavnaben, has got anticipatory bail from Gujarat high court.
During her questioning on August 28, she revealed that their relative, Samat Bhatu, had accompanied her to the house of the complainants. She is accused of issuing threats and all the three complaints had said that there was an unknown person with her.
Immediately after this disclosure, Bhatu moved the sessions court for protection against arrest as he would be facing charges under various sections of the IPC. One of these charges is not bailable. Bhatu’s counsel Amit Nair submitted before the court that Bhatu’s name was nowhere mentioned in FIRs.
The court granted anticipatory bail to Jhala subject to submission of his passport, mark his attendence at the Mahila police station every month and keep away from witnesses.
