Actor Arjun Kapoor says success of a film is ultimately decided by the audience watching it in theatres, irrespective of the buzz on social media.
“No number of likes and comments relate to the success or failure or choice of films. For a film to succeed, people have to come to the theatres to watch it,” Arjun said.
“But sometimes you feel every movie and every song is a hit on social media. When you come out of it, reality is different,” he said yesterday during ‘Bollywood- The next 5 years’ session at the 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
The “2 States” actor was joined by gen-next stars Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Aditya Roy Kapur, Ayushmann Khurranna and Kriti Sanon, who spoke about how their films affect brand endorsements, social media pressure, success and failures.
“Shudh Desi Romance” actress Parineeti said the young stars today have not yet developed a “loyal” fan following and are as good as their last film.
“There is no loyalty towards one person yet. They love the films that we do more than they love us. I think it’s going to take five, ten, I don’t know how many years to watch anything we do. We haven’t reached that stage,” she said.
Ayushmaan, who debuted with “Vicky Donor”, said if one has to stay long in the industry then he needs consistency.
“Like cricket, we have to spend some time in the middle, we have to be consistent. We have to be there for sometime, do decent work and build a certain fan base or loyalty,” he said.
“Shaandaar” star Alia said thinking too much about the “end result” may stop an actor to take risks.
Aditya said that criticism, where people pan a film within three hours in which an actor has put in a lot of effort, is heartbreaking.
