Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’s Director Shashank Khaitan in an Exclusive Chat with Gujarat Headline.
Tell us something about your Film?
As you know Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Film has been projected as a rom-com, but what I feel is the whole journey which is very Romantic. More than comedy, I would call it a romantic film. I was really inspired by DDLJ and best part of it was, they had true romance or rather hardcore romance.They had that eternal love. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is kind of going back to those days and saying there is a person ”made for you”, which you have loved for entire your life.
How did you get idea of making Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania?
DDLJ inspired me a lot. When I was writing my first film, I had in my mind what kind of romantic film I wanted to make which deals with a feeling of pure love. So by writting ahead I made Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. This film is a tribute to, all hardcore love stories which have been made in Bollywood uptill now.
This is your Debut Film, so how much Excited or Nervous you are?
I would say a bit of both, because after so many years of struggle I came at this stage today and seeing my film getting released. I am very excited as well as very nervous. I am very hopeful that people will like my film.
Share your experience working with Karan Johar
It has been a brilliant experience. I was struggling from 2 years to give my scripts to Karan. Before Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania I gave him 5 stories which Karan Johar’s creative team would read it. Many people say that being an outsider big production house like Dharma Productions will not make your film. But Karan Johar read my script and called me for an interview, he was probably a fair man. He just judged the story and without any hesitation he gave responsiblity of Directing the Film to me.So my journey with him is superb. He is a very help Producer to new entrants. He never interferes or stops you for anything.
What difficulties you faced during shooting of the film?
Honestly, the difficulties were there , in reaching my film to Dharma Productions. Diffilculties were reduced once shooting took up. But my toughest days were,,the days, when I passed out from my institute till the time, I got my first break, till than I had to struggle a lot.
How did you came up with an Idea to cast new comer Sidharth Shukla?
Actually idea of casting Sidharth was of Karan Johar’s. Because in my film we have very interesting character named ”Angad”. So we had to face many difficulties to get perfect casting for this role. But Karan met Sidharth on a reality show and told me that I should met him once. I met Sidharth and took his screen test. Later I got convinced that he is perfect guy to play this role.
Tell us something about your Bonding with Varun Dhawan?
Yes, Varun was probably one of the first few people who read my script and he was on board from last one and half year for this film. Varun as well as Alia has worked very hard for this film. We use to discuss a lot about shooting the film. So yes, Varun and me are very attached to each other. We both have learnt many things from each other. We became very good friends during shooting. We love each other and also have lot of respect. Hopefully it will remain after the release of the film.
What is your opinion on films getting into 100 Crore Club?
I generally donot know why and how it happens. I think I will be just happy, if my Producer Karan Johar is happy. He was the only person who trusted me. Whatever number makes him happy that number will make me happy. Moreover everyone who will watch this film should be happy. It should touch their life. If this happens than it will be as good as 100 crores for me.
Inspiring message to all new comers?
I have been asked many times this question, so I would just like to say that I never believe in outsider or insider in the industry. Just work hard and write a script some one or the other will definitely produce it. Donot believe in all this things just keep working hard so somewhere you will achieve your goals.
