Today Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reaches Surat court in connection with criminal defamation case filed in 2019 by a Gujarat BJP MLA over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the ‘Modi surname’.
During election rally held at Kolar in Karnataka on April 13, 2019, Rahul Gandhi had reportedly asked, “Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi… how come they all have Modi as the common surname. How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”
Purnesh Modi had filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi in April 2019 under IPC sections 499 and 500 that deal with defamation. Earlier, Rahul had appeared before the court in October 2019 and had pleaded not guilty for his comment.
A week before Thursday’s hearing, Chief Judicial Magistrate of Surat AN Dave had directed Rahul Gandhi to remain present on June 24 to record his final statement in the defamation case filed by Purnesh Modi.
Hearing in Surat Court completed. Rahul Gandhi left the court.
