Today its Buddha’s Birthday, a holiday traditionally celebrated in Mahayana Buddhism to to commemorate the birth of the Prince Siddhartha Gautama. The Buddhist festival is also known as Buddha Purnima.
Vesak (Buddha Purnima, Buddha Jayanti) is a festival that marks Gautama Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. It falls on the day of the full moon in May and it is a gazetted and government holiday in India.
It is also considered as the day he attained salvation or Nirvana under the Mahabodhi tree at Bodh Gaya.
