Bilkis Bano Case: Apex Court To Be Briefed About Action Against convicted cops
Today apex court said that Bilkis Bano, survivor of gang rape and Godhra riots, can seek higher compensation from the government. The court said the petitioner must file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) if they want to raise compensation. The court also sought a detailed reply from the Gujarat government on the status of the action taken up against the police blunder within the next four weeks.
Bilkis Yakoob Rasool was gangraped at Randhikpur village of Dahod district when they were fleeing to escape a marauding mob during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat. In the ghastly incident 14 family members were killed along with her three-and a-half year old daughter.
In May 2017, the Bombay High Court upheld the life imprisonment sentence of the 12 accused in the 2002 gang rape in Gujarat while setting aside the acquittal of 7 persons including policemen and doctors. The court also dismissed an appeal filed by CBI seeking death penalty for 3 of the convicts.
