Today morning renowned Bollywood actor Anupam Kher was allegedly refused entry into Srinagar city by Jammu and Kashmir police on arriving at the airport. Actor in his tweets alleged that the police have detained him at the airport but he has asked them for the official orders. “I have been told by J&K police that I cannot enter Srinagar city at all. I have asked them to show me the orders. Still at the airport,” Kher tweeted.“Asked J&K Police if I can visit my ancestral home or Kheer Bhawani temple. Even that is not allowed. Basically it is #AirportArrest,” Kher said in another tweet.The actor earlier talked to media that he was visiting Srinagar’s National Institute of Technology (NIT) to express solidarity and provide moral support to the students.“I am visiting there on personal basis. It’s a symbolic gesture as it is most important to show them solidarity. It’s important to give NIT Srinagar students moral support. I’m going there as a citizen to meet students,” Kher said.
“I am not going to flare-up this issue. I will visit there as a citizen, I don’t have any political fan following. I will also try to meet Mehbooba ji. I have not informed anyone, I have no security arrangements, I am going as a normal passenger,” he added.
A clash between local and outstation students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar last Thursday over a cricket match has snowballed into a major issue with non-Kashmiri students alleging police brutality.
The initial spark for the clashes came when some engineering students from outside the state claimed Kashmiri students had chanted anti-India slogans and burst firecrackers after India lost the World T20 semi-final to West Indies.
The NIT authorities said the campus has been closed and the students have been asked to vacate the hostel.
The police had to be called in after efforts by the NIT officials to control the situation and disperse the crowd failed. The police baton charged the protestors and fired teargas to control the situation.
