In Gujarat, 15% VAT is charged on vehicles registered in Gujarat and 12.5% VAT is charged on vehicles purchased from other states.
Transport companies purchase vehicles from out states and bring it to Gujarat for registration and save 2.5% VAT, if they register at any RTO in Gujarat. They have to pay the difference of 2.5% VAT to RTO Ahmedabad.
In a scam by senior RTO Inspector was involved in, purchase of 50 trucks by TCI Company of Haryana with a payment of 12.5% VAT in Haryana and balance 2.5% VAT due to Gujarat RTO was not paid incurring loss of lakhs to rupees to RTO Ahmedabad.
On getting exposed the scam, RTO authorities were on run. RTO books of 50 trucks of TCI were taken into custody of RTO Ahmedabad. Senior RTO Inspector will be probed in the case. Tax authorities were also informed about the matter, as per source.
