Today in Ahmedabad, a verdict was given in response to PIL Public Interest Litigation on Gujarat High Court challenging Gujarat governement’s decision of announcing 10 % quota in Gujarat to EBC Economically. appellant in PIL stated that it is attack on equal rights to all candidates and it is constitutional.
Gujarat HC quashes 10% quota for economically backward classes in educational institutions calling it unconstitutional.
The Gujarat government in April, had announced a 10% quota for all members of economically backward classes, including those belonging to the upper caste.
The decision, that was taken under Anandiben Patel’s government, didn’t seem to have bright prospects given an existing 49% reservation for SC, ST and OBC.The Supreme Court dictates that no state can have over 50% reservation.The quota was aimed at benefiting families with less than Rs 6 lakh of annual income.
