Ahmedabad: 1 km of Hathijan area declared bird-flu infected and 10 km as bird flu sensitive; Collector notified

Today in Ahmedabad, around 800 birds rescued from Vastral and kept at Hathijan have been declared bird-flu infected. These birds will be culled in the coming days to contain the infection, the collector’s office said. Ahmedabad Collector issued a notification declaring 1 km area in Hathijan as bird flu infected while 10 km area has been declared bird flu sensitive. According to sources, an NGO had been alerted of around 800 guinea fowls abandoned in an open plot in Vastral. It is suspected that the birds might have been infected with the flu which is why they were abandoned.

Deputy Director of infectious diseases A N Kanani said, “Officials from Animal Husbandry collected samples for analysis.” The samples were sent to Bhopal to be tested for bird flu. “The reports came back positive and following standard procedure, we have declared 1 kilometre area as infected zone and a radius of 10 kilometre a sensitive zone,” confirmed district Collector Avantika Singh. AMC Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation medical officer, health, Dr Bhavin Solanki said, “We have sent a medical team to the Asha foundation which had rescued the birds and administered treatment to 14 persons who came in contact with them.
