Setback for Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in defamation case on Modi surname

Today Surat Court rejects petition filed by Congress Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi seeking stay on his conviction in 2019 defamation case for his remarks on ‘Modi surname’. The case against Congress MP was filed by Purnesh Modi of BJP. Rahul cannot be reinstated as MP for now.

Congress MP had requested that his conviction be paused pending his appeal against a court order sentencing him to 2 years in jail. The trial court, said the Congress leader, had treated him harshly, overwhelmingly influenced by his status as an MP.

Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as an MP to continue as a Surat sessions court rejects his plea for a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case. The Congress leader will have to now move the Gujarat high court in appeal.
