In a very shocking incident has come to light from a college in Bhuj where 68 girls were forced to remove their undergarments personally and prove that they were not menstruating after the hostel rector complaint to the principal that some girls have violated their religious practices by entering the temple and kitchen during their periods.
The alleged incident took place at Shri Sahjanand Girls’ Institute (SSGI) located in Bhuj. The institution’s mission reads self-development and empowerment of girls through modern, scientific, and value-based education. Reportedly, no police complaint has been lodged in connection with the matter. But a committee has been formed by the in-charge vice-chancellor of Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kutch University for investigating the matter.
The followers of Bhuj’s Swaminarayan Mandir run the college. It was founded in 2012 and in 2014 it shifted to a new building on the premises of Shree Swaminarayan Kanya Mandir. Nearly 1,500 students are enrolled in the college in various courses in Commerce, Science, and Arts. The college has a boarding facility on campus with 68 girls, who come from remote villages, stay in the college hostel.
The sect’s norms prescribe that menstruating females should not enter the kitchen and temple. They are even barred from touching fellow students. The hostel authorities complained to principal that some female inmates who were menstruating not just mingled with other fellow hostellers, but also ventured into the kitchen and visited the temple located on the college premises.
One of the hostellers, told media that on Thursday, during their lecture, they were asked to come out of the classrooms and queue up in the corridor. She said that the principal insulted and abused them, and questioned if they were getting their periods. Two girls, who were having periods, stepped aside.
In spite of this, they were paraded to the washroom and three female professors asked them to remove their undergarments individually so that they could examine if they were having periods.
KSKVKU in-charge Vice Chancellor formed a committee to probe the matter and said that she will ensure strict action is taken against the individual responsible for this act.
