Gopal Subramaniam not in a Race of Becoming Supreme Court Judge: as per Sources

Former Solicitor General attached to UPA government and a senior counsel Gopal Subramaniam has said to have withdrwan from candidature of becoming Supreme Court judge , said sources

Before BJP came to power in the month of May, Supreme Court collegium had nominated for Supreme Court judge two lawyers including Mr Subramaniam.

As per sources, the law ministry reportedly did not want him as a judge and wanted the collegium to reconsider. The new government had reportedly been sitting on the appointment over a “negative” input from the Central Bureau of Investigation over his alleged meeting with a lawyer of 2G scam accused former telecom minister A Raja.

Some objectionable references about him in the Radia tapes, or the controversial tapes of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia’s phone conversations, were reportedly made.

He had resigned as Solicitor General in July 2011 over differences with the UPA government and also written to then Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal denying that he had ever met the lawyer.

After the Supreme Court collegium comprising the Chief Justice of India and the four seniormost judges, sends its nominations, the government can ask for reconsideration. But if the collegium sends back the file with the same names, the government has to accept it.
