State Commission for Women member Somya Gurjar takes selfie with Rape Survivor

A member of the Rajasthan State Commission for Women has come under fire for clicking a selfie with a rape survivor, prompting the chairperson of the commission to seek a written explanation. Somya Gurjar clicked the selfie on Tuesday when she along with chairperson Suman Sharma went to meet the woman at the Mahila police station (Jaipur North). Incidentally, in both the pictures that are going viral on social media, Gurjar is seen holding the mobile device and the chairperson is seen looking into the frame.

Distancing herself from the incident, the chairman of the Commission said, “I was talking to the victim when the member of the commission clicked these selfies. I am not aware when she (Somya Gurjar) clicked. I do not favour such acts and has sought a written explanation from her. She has been asked to submit the explanation by tomorrow.” The 30-year old woman has alleged she was raped by her husband and his two brothers who tattooed cuss words on her for not giving Rs 51,000 as dowry. On Monday, an FIR was registered under sections of 498-A (Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act), 376 (punishment for rape)and 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) of IPC and an investigation in the case has been initiated.
